I'M SARAH

Response

what inspired me to submit an entry to the TEDxTeen #CreateDialogue challenge.

I was exposed to the media at a very young age, when I was 14, I remember looking at beautiful women on the internet and knowing that I won’t be good enough to be like them. Because of this, I suffer from major low self-esteem and would always doubt my self-worth which led me into depression.

I managed to cope and overcome it by doing art.

As I grow up and I became more aware of the gender inequality towards women in advertising, I realised that it is unfair for companies to put an unrealistic portrayal of women just to make profit when young girls all over the world suffer from eating disorders and low self-esteem to achieve society’s beauty standards.

My personal experience inspired me to submit an entry to the challenge, I wanted to create a piece that sparked a conversation and showed the public that unrealistic beauty standards was a silent killer, even if it involves ‘hanging’ myself for art. With my major in Communication Design, I thought it would be great to use my skills to convey a social issue I personally experienced and I’m passionate about through design. Having a graphic design background, I want to motivate myself to develop my photography skills outside of university.

what I hope to gain from attending TEDxTeen in person in November.

What I hope to gain from attending TEDxTeen in person is to be inspired, motivated and have the opportunity to make an impact with like-minded people who will be attending as well. It would be the perfect avenue for me to create dialogue with other people, dialogues that are disruptive, empowering and will challenge our beliefs and perspectives. I also hope to make connections with like-minded people so that we can create meaningful projects or creative collaborations together as a follow up of the event.

I grew up watching TED talks on Youtube for the longest time. I gained a lot of motivation and knowledge from it. It never fails to empower me and give me a fresh outlook on life.

Watching a TED talk online compared to watching it in person is different, if I managed to be so motivated just by watching through a screen, I can’t imagine how much of a positive impact it can bring to me with the energy and the atmosphere of being a part of the actual event. Furthermore, I am a Malaysian studying in Australia and attending this event would further expand my perspectives of different cultures.

On a side note, it has always been my dream to go to New York City!

myself as a creative

As a creative, I have a strong passion in design because I believe that design has the ability to influencing one’s emotions or thoughts more than words alone can. Knowing the power of design, I started up a small business aim to spread happiness through design where I design and sell products that are positive. As a creative, I also don’t want to restrict myself to create with only one medium because I think different mediums can connect with people in different ways, that’s why I do my best to learn other creative skills such as photography, projection art, watercolour, motion graphics, UX, handicrafts and henna art.

I was a very quiet and shy kid growing up, I always found comfort in drawing because it is a way to express myself to others. That’s why I believe that design is also an important outlet, like how Amelia Halls coped with her depression with art from the recent TEDxTeen in London. I am a self-taught designer before deciding to pursue a major in it in university, my passion in design fuelled me to learn from tutorials online in my free time and do volunteering work in design.

I am currently in my final semester of Bachelor of Design (Communication Design) in RMIT University in Melbourne. In my course, I learnt to communicate with audiences of all kinds through design. When I graduate, I hope to work in start-ups that solves problems. I am very ambitious and hope to create an impact in anyway in whatever I do as a creative.
